Last Few Sunsets At June Lake, CA
We’re coming down to our last few sunsets at June Lake. We would probably be gone already if it weren’t for our bladder shipment…waiting, waiting…you see after 2 weeks of nicely warm weather, temps have started to plummet to the mid-20’s overnight. Although we’ve done colder, this is pretty much the edge of what the cats will accept. In fact they are already complaining and our handy dandy cat thermometer = cat stickiness is approaching infinity…a sure sign of imminent feline mutiny. Since we’re all about the paws in this house, that means we’ve gotta move on. RV Sue came to the same conclusion just a few days ago as she passed through the area (we just missed her!), so as soon as that darn package arrives (scheduled tomorrow PM) we’re going to follow suit down to lower elevations.
But that doesn’t take away from the time we’ve had here. The color change this year has not been as dramatic as it was last year, probably because of the warmer-than-usual temps, but it’s still been absolutely outstanding. We’ve hiked stunning lakes, enjoyed perfectly sunny days and drowned a fair few glasses of wine with our buddies Lu & Terry. We even went back and hiked Virginia Lakes again (just today in fact) simply because it’s just so darn special. Our next stop from here will be Bishop, CA only ~60 miles south, but ~2,000 feet lower (so undoubtedly warmer) and we’ve got more adventures planned there. In the meantime I’ll leave you with a few last pics of our wonderful time here….

Cat stickiness – I hear ya, Sister! Temps are just mid-30’s here, but that gets cold enough for the cats, even with their insulated furry igloos. We’re also headed not many miles south, but a couple thousand feet lower.

Had to go back and read your post on cat stickiness…hilarious!! I enjoyed your photos very much and am SO jealous that you are going to Bishop and I am not :^( My favorite little town in the whole world. Two of my siblings were born in Bishop so it has very special meaning for me. Enjoy.

Any “must sees” in the area that you would recommend? This is going to be a completely new stop for us. Very excited!

See the Sierras at their best::

a photo gallery that will definitely inspire you to have camera working overtime.. Galen would go that extra mile, extra climb for extraordinary captures not everyone has the opportunity to see.
the Bishop hot spring:

is the commercial hot spring
downstream are ponds and boondocking sites.. turn north on the well worn road a quarter mile before the springs… it’s an old paved road, but havent seen a big rig there so walk in first. Warmer at night when the water is released from upstream..

I’ve been following your southward trek. I wonder if you have ever tried the hot springs just south of Bishop off the highway? Actually, I wonder if they are still there. About thirty years ago Richard and I were tent camping in the Sierras and someone told us of the place. We’ve only just driven by there once since then and I couldn’t remember exactly where they were, and didn’t have the time to check out the area.
But the hot springs themselves were wonderful. The highway was not too far away but we were totally alone sitting in the spring just enjoying the hot water all by ourselves, for several hours that day. Long time ago. But they should be there, on the western side of 395, as I recall. Bishop is such a wonderful small town. It’s a place one could really enjoy spending time there.

We have not tried these…and I don’t even know about them, but I am DEFNITELY going to try and see if we can find them!! Cheers for the tip!

Oh, by the way, So sorry to read of your bed’s mishap – reminds me of why I am so thankful we decided to get rid of the one in our rig. I have to admit, I did sort of snicker when I read it. I surely hope you get the bladder or whatever you need to get going. It must be getting pretty uncomfortable for you guys.

Check out Goodall creek and talboose creek just outside of Aberdeen.
Aberdeen is between Big Pine and Lone Pine. Just off 395

I love your writing, Nina, but you don’t have to write a word. Your photos say it all . Another gorgeous group.

Hi Nina,
Schatt’s Bakery is a must in Bishop. Their apple streudel is the best. Of course they have the sheepherder’s bread and a huge assortment of other tasty stuff.
When you get down towards Lone Pine, don’t miss Manzanar National HIstoric Site between Independence and Lone Pine.
Bob and I will be hosting at Calaveras Big Trees until the 1st week of December so I imagine if we had kitties, the degree of cat stickiness would be quite high for many days.
Hope to see you in the desert. Our plans are to be there in February.

Come on down to Benson, AZ. The nights get down only to about 55 – 60, and that doesn’t happen until close to 6am.

Hi! We are new to your blog. Planning to start RVing next summer. Our friends Mike and Linda on THE BEAR recommended your website. It is very cool…love the photos. Thanks for letting us share in your experience. For now, we have a sailboat and are planning another trip from Virginia in November to the Bahamas and returning late May. THEN we start looking for an RV for the summer. I am very excited to try something new! It’s great to have a site like yours to get the ”feel’ for it before we set out.
Cheers! Cathie and Tom on s/v INTERLUDE.

Very cool! Welcome to the blog and so happy you enjoy it! Good luck on the plans to find your perfect RV. It’s a buyer’s market out there right now so there are lots of great rigs.
