The foulest place in the west is just right to test out Gore-Tex boots, socks, hats, gloves, pants and jackets. Then laugh at what Mother Nature can throw at you. How did the old timers do it? Goodyear had rubber boots, capes and hats back in the 1850’s, but these things didn’t breath and you sweated like a sauna under these awful monstrosities. It was the time of wooden ships and iron men, so they usually went without. The grimm reaper took its toll and the average age at death was in the forties. We now claim the magic number of 70, but do we enjoy life more now days? I wonder…
I’m always amazed at how the original settlers managed out here. And the lighthouse keepers that stayed right on the crazy coast with minimal access to anyone…just the lighthouse and fog, wind, rain and cold. I totally admire those folks.
